An Overview of Survival Spanish®
by author Robert Dent
Several studies have shown that native-speakers use only 2,500
distinct words and phrases
on a daily basis. With the
Survival Spanish® approach, it's not how many words you know, but rather, which
words you can effectively use to achieve your goal.
Most public safety professionals are problem solvers and
pragmatists, by profession. They
often feel, “Give me the
tools I need to get the job done and cut out the superfluous.”
By targeting instruction and learning materials to use those
2500 words effectively, the Survival Spanish® methodology
teaches the public safety professional to speak the most important
Spanish in the shortest amount of time.
It is both cost and time effective.
Many
public safety students, because of mandatory training requirements,
just do not have the time to devote to in depth Spanish language
courses. Others do not
have the interest or aptitude to become fluent in the language.
Those who have tried unsuccessfully to learn the language,
often find their textbook's, teaching boring drills, confusing grammar
rules, and verbiage that is not targeted to the public safety
profession. Furthermore,
standard classroom textbooks by themselves can never provide much of
what is really needed or useful. With
the Survival Spanish® method, the instructor is teaching from the same reference manual
that the student is using in the field…and in real life situations.
Survival
Spanish® students learn to recognize and target what is useful through practice, repetition and associating the
familiar with the unfamiliar. (The
Survival Spanish® materials
contain tips on grammar, verbs and sentence structure that can be used
in more in depth Spanish language courses.)
Many
students learn Spanish successfully by using the traditional, formal
and highly structured teaching method.
However, a significant number who have tried to learn Spanish
the conventional way, have fallen short of practical usage.
Perhaps it’s time to rethink the “same old method” with a
welcome change with a new targeted, job specific approach…enter Survival Spanish®.
Most public safety personnel who fail learning Spanish fail
because they are not motivated by the instructor or the learning
materials are uninteresting or too difficult.
Discouraged students often complain the training was boring,
unrealistic and not job specific for their needs.
The Survival Spanish®
training method, addresses the relationship between sensory
perception, the brain, “memory keys” and the rate of practice.
Once learned, as a prompt, the “key” for memory
recall evokes an appropriate response. Conceptual
protocols for learning, remembering, and recalling practical and
abstract concepts by means of cognitive association are retained by
realistic practice and reinforced by immediate, positive feedback
i.e., “Mental Rehearsal.” Thus,
the information stored in short-term memory is uniquely transferred to
long-term memory before it is forgotten.
In my opinion, the key to language learning falls upon the
talent of the instructor to motivate the student, the quality of
course materials to hold the student’s attention and immediate,
positive feedback. Positive
feedback instills confidence and gives the student a feeling that
progress is being made immediately.
The training should continually present students with realistic
material that is interesting, easily learned, job specific and
relevant to the student’s profession. Addressing
those issues will enhance interest, learning and increase their
motivation.
